Two men have been fined after being found guilty of deer poaching in Hertfordshire.

They were arrested in the early hours of Tuesday 11 December 2012 after police stopped a van they were travelling in at Little Gaddesden, near Berkhamsted, close to Hertfordshire's Ashridge Park.  Inside the van was a deer that had had its throat slit.

James Allen-Harvey, 26, of Stonegrove Gardens, Edgware and Barry Moss, 26, from Somers Square, Hatfield were found guilty under Section 1 and 9 of the Deer Act 1991.

Moss was fined £400 and ordered to pay £350 costs. Allen-Harvey was fined £350 and ordered to pay £350 costs.

Sergeant Jamie Bartlett from the Hertfordshire Police Rural Operational Support Team said:  “Incidents of poaching and coursing are relatively common in the countryside and rural areas.

"This sends a positive message that we will deal with these matters and seek with the support of the courts to get the most appropriate results, which in some cases can include the seizure of vehicles and the disqualification of drivers too.”
