Family Pay Tribute To Hatfield Grandfather

The family of a man from Hatfield who died following a car crash have described him as "one in a million".

83-year-old John Lawrence died following the collision in Wheathampstead on Saturday 27th July.

His wife Betty, son Steve and his wife Angela, and their four sons, aged between 21 and 30, all have fond memories of their husband/father/grandfather.

They released the following statement:

Steve and Angela said: "He was a real family man.  He was very close to his grandsons, they had a lovely relationship and they thought the world of him.  They always came over to see him and are devastated by his death.  We can't quite believe he is no longer with us.  Last Monday, we all went out for a drink, which was really nice and we often had family meals out.  My Dad always had a stew on the go for anyone who might pop in, which our sons loved.   

"Dad was one in a million.  He was a very special man who would do anything for anyone as well as being the main carer for his wife, Betty. He was well-known and liked in the area and would always put himself out to give someone a lift or pick up some shopping for someone.  His neighbours are very upset about his death and have said how much they will miss his smile and friendly way. 

"John was very close to his brothers and sisters - sadly two brothers died within the last five years. 

"Dad was a very competitive man.  We've never heard so much noise playing tiddlywinks on Boxing Day! It was the same with cards too. He was a very organised man and had lots of friends."

John lived in Hatfield all his life spending the majority of his life working for British Aerospace as an engineering inspector after working on market stalls when he was younger.  Most recently, he worked for Hatfield Parish Council as a maintenance man.

In his spare time, he used to go bowling at King George field, loved reading autobiographies and history books and doing crosswords.  He used to have dogs and would go to Christchurch for long weekends or week breaks.  
They added: "We would like to say big thank-you to everyone for their overwhelming support and kindness over the last few days."

A service for John will take place on Monday August 11th at 4.15pm at Harwood Park Crematorium in Stevenage.
