Major roadworks get underway in the centre of St Albans today.

Resurfacing work is starting on the A1081 Chequers Street and St Peters Street, closing both roads. It's expected to take five nights.

The £55,000 resurfacing scheme, which is being carried out by Eurovia on behalf of Hertfordshire County Council, will take place between 8pm and 5am.

The work will be split into two phases: Phase one will take place on Chequers Street, between the junctions with the A1081 London Road and A1057 Hatfield Road Roundabout. Phase two will be on St Peters Street, between the junctions with the A1057 Hatfield Road Roundabout and Avenue Road. Also, please note that during these works Victoria Street will be open for residential access only.

Signed alternative routes will be in place and drivers who need access to properties in the area will be allowed through; there will gatemen at each end of the closure.

Terry Douris, Cabinet Member for Highways, said: "These works form part of Hertfordshire County Council's on-going commitment to maintain and improve our roads for the benefit of all road users in Hertfordshire.

"We appreciate that these significant resurfacing works are likely to cause disruption and inconvenience to motorists. We apologise for this and would ask everyone for their co-operation while the work is in progress."

The work is weather dependent and any changes to the proposed start date, duration or working hours will be announced on the information boards on site and will be available here.

Bus service routes may also be affected.
