Olympic Torch Comes To East Anglia

Heart's been learning that people from Norfolk and Suffolk will be able to take part in pre- Olympic celebrations next year.

It was announced this morning what route the relay torch will go on and we can now reveal that it will be passing through Norwich on the 4th July next summer and Ipswich on the 5th July.

Norwich is one of just 66 evening celebration locations across the UK confirmed today by the London 2012 Organising Committee of the Olympic and Paralympic Games (LOCOG).  The evening events will offer thousands of people the opportunity to come together and get involved in celebrations and share in the Olympic spirit.  As part of the events LOCOG and the Presenting Partners, Coca-Cola, Lloyds TSB and Samsung, will stage exciting entertainment shows where a cauldron will be lit from the Olympic Flame, marking the end of the day’s proceedings.

Councillor Brenda Arthur, leader of Norwich City Council, said: “This is a once in a lifetime opportunity to put Norwich on the global map.

“It’s such an exciting event for the city to host and I’m really looking forward to getting as many communities involved in the run up to it, to make it an event that truly represents everyone in Norwich.

“I’m thrilled that we’ve been given this opportunity and people living in Norwich can rest assured we will put as much energy and passion into the Olympic evening celebrations as we do with any of our other fantastic events.”

Russell Williams, Chief Executive of the Ipswich Borough Council, declared: “This is fantastic news and we will be pulling out all the stops to make this an occasion to remember for years to come. We have been working hard to get as many people involved as possible and we will be meeting our partners across the county to ensure everyone in Ipswich and Suffolk is involved. It is appropriate that the event falls within the Ip-art summer festival as the whole county will already be in celebratory mood. ”

The Olympic Flame will come to Ipswich on the evening of Thursday 5th July and will form the centrepiece of an entertainment extravaganza set in Christchurch Park. As part of the event, LOCOG (the London Organising Committee of the Olympic & Paralympic Games) and its presenting partners Coca-Cola, Lloyds TSB and Samsung will stage a variety of entertainment shows culminating in a cauldron being lit from the flame itself.
