Tributes have been paid to an American serviceman, who was based at RAF Lakenheath and killed in Germany.

25 year old Senior Airman Nicholas Alden died along with another member of American Forces when a gunman shot at a bus transporting troops at Frankfurt Airport on Wednesday.

Another two servicemen, also based at Lakenheath, were badly hurt and remain in hospital.

A statement from RAF Lakenheath reads: "The bus was transporting a security forces team assigned to RAF Lakenheath, U.K., from the airport to Ramstein Air Base, Germany.

They were on their way to support Overseas Contingency Operations. German authorities have the shooter in custody."

Colonel John Quintas, commander of the 48th Fighter Wing at RAF Lakenheath, said of Airman Alden: "He was a great, great young kid.

He was with us just a short time at Lakenheath and he made an immediate impact on his arrival here.

It is a tragic, tragic loss to our family here, to the Alden family and to the US Forces."
