The incident occurred between 12 noon and 12.30pm on Sunday 30 October, at the corner of Paddock Mill court and Greatmeadow Road.
A group of children were playing and the girl went to stroke the dog, that was running around off its lead in the company of a man aged in his twenties.
The girl was then bitten on the right side of her face, a wound which required three stitches.
The man walking the dog is described as white and was wearing a grey tracksuit top, jeans and a baseball cap. The dog was a black-and-brindle Staffordshire Bull Terrier.
Witnesses to this incident, or anyone with information, should call Northamptonshire Police on 101 - alternatively, information can be given anonymously to Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
