Traffic police have appealed for witnesses after a fatal accident involving a coach and two heavy goods vehicles which forced the closure of the M1 for more than four hours.

Northamptonshire Police said the driver of one of the lorries was pronounced dead at the scene of the accident near Watford Gap services at about 2.10pm yesterday.

He has been named as 48 year old Alan Norman from Nuneaton.

Nobody else was injured in the crash, which closed the northbound carriageway near the junction with the M45 and caused severe disruption to rush-hour journeys.

Witnesses to the incident, which also involved a Ford Transit van, are urged to call Northamptonshire Police on 03000 111 222 or the Drivewatch Hotline on 0800 174615.
