Nurse Jailed for Rape

A 37-year-old nurse has been jailed to nine years in prison for sexually assaulting two female patients at Oxford's John Radcliffe Hospital.

Oliver Balicao from Bicester, although originally from the Philippines, was a nurse at the John Radcliffe Hospital in Oxford at the time of these two offences, which took place in October 2002 and October 2004. The first offence involved a 22 year-old, whom he indecently assaulted. The second offence involved a teenager admitted to hospital after taking an overdose, who was subsequently raped by Balicao.

CPS case lawyer, Jenny Jonckheer said:

"Oliver Balicao was a nurse at the John Radcliffe and as such, he was in a particular position of trust. In our society it is essential that a vulnerable patient enters a hospital knowing that they are in a safe environment and that their best interests are at the very essence of a caring environment. This defendant took full advantage of their vulnerability and exposed two young people to a terrifying ordeal. We are satisfied that his actions have been met with the full weight of the law and that justice has been served. We praise the two victims for their courage in bringing these matters to the attention of the police and the court and hope that today’s outcome can help bring closure for them."

Det Con Lucinda Bevan said:

“This is a fantastic result and all credit must be given to both victims for having the courage and tenacity to come forward, and not only make the complaint, but see it through to the end, which has been an extremely difficult and traumatic time. The victims have bravely gone through the ordeal of giving evidence, several years after the incidents happened. I hope that they can now put this ordeal behind them.”
