The design for Peterborough's new War Memorial has been unveiled.

The memorial [pictured - right & below] is based on the Armed Forces Memorial at the National Memorial Arboretum in London.

The obelisk is expected to be erected on Bridge Street, near Peterborough Town Hall, by Remembrance Day 2012.

There will be steps leading up to the obelisk, on which will be the words "Lest we forget".

Peterborough City Council is working with Peterborough Veterans' Association and the Royal British Legion to develop the project and secure funding for the new memorial, expected to cost in the region of £45,000.

So far £7,087 has been raised.

Donations to the appeal can be made online at www.justgiving.com/peterboroughwarmemorial.
