Arrests After Southampton Football Match

Two people have been charged after being arrested for homophobic chanting at the Southampton v Brighton football match at St Mary's Stadium on Saturday (November 18).

The two, both Southampton fans, were arrested under the provisions of the Football Spectators Act.

A third man has been charged after being arrested for a non-related public order offence.

All three have been bailed to appear before Southampton Magistrates on December 2, 2011, and have bail conditions preventing them from attending any football matches.

Rikesh Sakaria, 28, of Bassett Avenue, Southampton, is charged with an offence under section 5 of the Public Order Act relating to an incident of homophobic abuse;

Joseph Adam Webb, 26, of Field Close, Romsey, is charged with an offence under section 5 of Public Order Act relating to an incident of homophobic abuse;

David Weir, 38, of Belvedere Road, Bexley Heath, with an offence under section 5 of Public Order Act relating to an incident of abusive behaviour;

A 27-year-old man from Hove in East Sussex has also received a caution after being arrested for throwing a bottle.

There were some small pockets of fighting amongst the rival fans as they left the ground after the game in Northam Road, but these were quickly dispersed by officers and no further arrests were necessary.
