Police have issued footage of the inside of a property which was burgled in Waterlooville.

The footage is being released following a spate of break ins in the Waterlooville, Havant, Emsworth and Hayling Island areas.

The incidents are occurring overnight or during the early evening when it becomes dark.


 
Detective Sergeant Steve Kelly of the Priority Crime team at Waterlooville police station said:

“This footage, captured from the attending officer’s body worn video, demonstrates the impact of being burgled. It really can be devastating for a homeowner to arrive home and find their property turned upside down.
 
“We’re hoping that this insight will encourage residents to take our advice to do everything they can to avoid their home being targeted.
 
“The main advice is to leave your home secure and make sure it looks occupied, leave a light on or buy a timer switch to avoid your home being in darkness before you get home from work.”
 
Hampshire Police are giving the following advice:
 

  • Make sure your home is locked securely when you leave the property and at night, but also in unoccupied rooms
  • Don’t leave your property on show, particularly small electricals like Ipads, tablets, laptops and cameras. Jewellery and cash should also be stored away somewhere safe and difficult to locate
  • Leave a light on or use a timer switch, especially as darkness now sets in earlier
  • Check what is in your garden which could allow easy access to your home. Garden tools or ladders left out and bins left in positions which assist an offender to get over your garden wall make your home an easy target
  • Make sure you lock back and side gates
  • Be alert to suspicious activity or people and vehicles in your street that you do not recognise. Many offences have been followed by a suspicious caller or leaflet through the door. If you answer the door to a suspicious caller always report it along with any vehicle details you have to police on 101.
  • Vulnerable residents, or over 60s, are also entitled to a visit from the Blue Lamp Trust. They will complete a free of charge security check and can fit extra locks for a very small donation.
