Over the weekend traffic has been running freely. Hampshire County Council say snow ploughs were deployed to clear roads of snow and over 100 farmers were called on to help with this work on rural roads.

Since Thursday 17 January 2013, 4000 tonnes of salt has been spread on Hampshire's roads, not including salt from community salt bins. Round the clock salting was carried out to help prevent ice developing on road surfaces:

By 8am on Monday 21 January 2013, Priority 1 routes (that carry 85% of the county's traffic) will have been treated 11 times since Thursday evening including runs in the early hours of Sunday and Monday morning (2am);

Priority 2 routes were treated early morning on Saturday and Sunday;

Community routes, to local schools, shops and doctors' surgeries, will have been treated four times i..e. daily Friday, Saturday, Sunday and at 4am Monday morning.

Aware that the ground is still saturated due to the significant amount of rain fall during the winter season so far, there is the potential for water run-off from fields and high ground to wash away the salt being spread by the salting lorries. To minimise this, salt wicks (porous bags filled with salt) were placed at known locations along the highway to maintain a salinity level in the flowing water to try and help prevent it from freezing on the road surface.

Highways crews also assisted local borough and district council staff to keep town centres open for business on Saturday, and helping to clear footways to local schools on Sunday.

Residents and community organisations in many areas have helped to clear snow from side roads and residential streets, making use of the salt in the 3000 community salt bins to prevent ice.
