Police are appealing for witnesses after an assault was reported in Gosport.
A 20-year-old man returned to his car parked in Grange Crescent to find two young men attempting to gain access to the vehicle.
The victim challenged them and it's claimed the pair assaulted him and made threats with a knife.
The 20-year-old was not injured during these events, which took place between 1.30am and 1.50am on the morning of Wednesday, August 15, 2012.
Police believe there were other people nearby at the time. It's understood they did not take part in the assault, but challenged the violent actions of the offenders.
Investigating officer PC David Tulip said: "We ask that members of the public remain vigilant to anyone acting suspiciously around motor vehicles, and report any such behaviour to police at the earliest opportunity.
"Contact us straight away on 999 with good descriptions of those involved."
Officers are appealing for witnesses, anyone with knowledge of these events, or any other suspicious behaviour around vehicles in Gosport on the night of August 14 to 15, to contact police by phoning 101.
