Government Minister Norman Baker is visiting Portsmouth today (March 1st) to see first-hand the pioneering 20mph limit in city roads.

Portsmouth became the first city in Britain to have a 20mph speed limit on almost all residential streets in 2008 and the scheme has brought the city national attention and interest from many other councils.

A government report into Portsmouth's citywide 20mph limit scheme last year has found that the number of recorded road casualties has fallen by 22%.

Norman Baker, MP Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State for Transport will tour Portsmouth to find out more about the 20mph scheme.

Cllr Jason Fazackarley, the council's Cabinet Member for Traffic and Transportation will be accompanying the minister. He said: “We’re looking forward to the opportunity to highlight the scheme to the minister and show him how it’s improving our streets for residents as well as for pedestrians and cyclists.”
