A 49-year-old man has been remanded in custody charged with the murder of a retired police officer in Portsmouth.
Stephen Cowdrey, of St Augustine Road, Southsea, is accused of killing 87-year-old Stanley Carter at his home in Greenwood Avenue, Cosham, between 11 and 16 September.
He appeared at Winchester Crown Court for a brief hearing on Friday 20 September. He was remanded in custody and will next appear at the same court on 21 November for a plea and case management hearing.
Mr Carter's body was found by police on Sunday night (15 September) after officers received information about his death.
Cowdrey was arrested at Portsmouth central police station shortly afterwards.
A post-mortem examination has been carried out to establish the cause of death but Hampshire police say they are not in a position to release the preliminary results and officers continue to appeal for information.
