Saints Guaranteed Premier League Safety
Southampton will play in the Premier League again next season, after having their survival confirmed without even playing.
Wigan Athletic were beaten 4-1 by Arsenal at Emirates Stadium on Tuesday 14th May. That means Wigan are the third and final team relegated to the Championship. Queen's Park Rangers and Reading were already down.
Saints are on 40 points with one game left of the season. Wigan's defeat means they stay on 35 with only 3 left to play for, so are unable to catch any of the teams above them.
2012/13 was Southampton's first season back in the top flight after two consecutive promotions under manager Nigel Adkins. He was sacked in January and replaced with Argentinian Mauricio Pochettino, who can now start planning for his first full season in the Premier League.
