Up to 50 homes were evacuated in the Shirley area of Southampton by police earlier after builders found an old shell.

They were in the area of Nightingale and Dyer Roads.

Builders doing ground works at the junction unearthed an old shell shortly before 1pm.  It was described as a rusty 22-inch brass bottomed shell, about 2.5ins in diameter.

A 50-metre cordon was placed around the shell, including roads and gardens.

Bomb disposal experts were called from Portsmouth. They dealt with the shell and the cordon was lifted after 3pm.
