Southampton Could Get 20mph Limits

Southampton could get 20mph speed limits on all its residential streets.

Residents in the Lower Brownhill Road, Green Lane and Wimpson Lane area of Maybush are today being asked for their views on a possible trial there.
 
Plans for the trial, which if successful could see 20mph limits introduced across the city, were revealed at last Wednesday's annual council meeting which was attended by pupils from Newlands Primary School who are backing the proposal.

Portsmouth already has them, while Chichester is bringing them in this summer.
 
Residents in 58 roads in the area will now receive letters asking if they support the implementation of a trial 20mph limit and what road safety concerns they have in their area. They can provide feedback by post on via an online feedback form.

Consultation with residents will last until December after which time, if the scheme receives backing, new signs and road markings will be installed.
 
John Harvey, Highways Manager, Southampton City Council said:

"Just in this one small area of the city there have been 16 accidents in the last three years and we believe the introduction of 20mph will significantly improve road safety by modifying driver behaviour in this area.

"Other benefits of the project include raising awareness of healthier travel options and improving the environment for local residents."
 
A drop-in session with council representatives has been arranged at Millbrook Library on Evenlode Road on Thursday 30th May between 4 - 8pm, providing an opportunity for residents to discuss the scheme further.
