Winchester Cathedral Gets £10m Funding

Winchester Cathedral's being given more than 10 million pounds of lottery funding.

It will be spent on urgent conservation work and new exhibitions for its greatest treasures.

They include six mortuary chests containing the bones of Anglo Saxon kings.

Other key historic sites ranging from Henry VIII's hunting lodge to the forerunner to modern skyscrapers are to receive a share of £47million.

The idea is to help boost potential tourist attractions around UK and promote the country's heritage tourism economy, which the Heritage Lottery Fund said was already worth £26 billion a year.

Carole Souter, chief executive of the HLF, said:

"We know that heritage is a huge draw for visitors from home and abroad.

"More than a quarter of all UK holiday activities undertaken by UK residents now involve heritage.

"These projects all offer the public the chance to explore and enjoy our rich and complex history.''
