Winning Spitfire Design

The winning design for a monument to the Spitfire in Southampton's been chosen.

The landmark will be up to 50 metres high and will be placed on the city's waterfront at Trafalgar dock near Ocean Village - just two miles away from the site where RJ Mitchell designed the iconic aircraft.

More than 300 people entered a competition to design the monument, which will be taller than Gateshead's Angel of the North.

The winning entry was deisgned by 36-year-old architect Nick Hancock who has a studio in north London.

It shows a Spitfire climbing into the sky and it's supported by a steel mast and based on a circular platform.

It will cost just under two million pounds and it's hoped construction will start at the end of next year once all of the money's been raised. It's thought funding will come from donations and sponsors.
