A 29-year-old man has today been sentenced to four and a half years in prison after pleading guilty to an incident of sexual assault in Thetford.

Martin Anthony Law from Poppy Close, Thetford, was sentenced at Norwich Crown Court by Judge Darrock.

The offence related to the assault of a 25-year-old woman in Thetford during the early hours of Saturday, 24 April, 2010.

The victim was attacked from behind, with Law claiming he was armed with a knife, and forced into woodland where he stripped her of her clothing before he was spooked and fled the scene

Detective Constable Dean Harrison, of the Rape Investigation Unit, said: "This was a stranger attack against a lone female which left her in an extremely distressed state.

"We would like to commend the victim for her bravery in coming forward and reporting the crime which has had an enormous impact upon her. She is an incredibly brave lady.

"We hope this result will encourage other victims of violence and serious sexual assault to contact us. Help is at the end of a phone."

Law has also been placed on the Sex Offenders Register for life.
