Suffolk Police are questioning a man on suspicion of murder after a woman's body was found in a car park in Bury St Edmunds.

The death of the woman, which was initially being treated as unexplained, is now being treated as suspicious.

The 55-year-old man from the Bury St Edmunds area has been arrested on suspicion of murder and is currently being held in custody at the Bury St Edmunds Police Investigation Centre for questioning.

Police were called by the ambulance service just before 9am with a report that a woman had been found collapsed in the St Edmunds Tavern public house car park in Risbygate Street, Bury St Edmunds.

The woman, who is believed to be aged in her 50s was sadly pronounced dead at the scene.

Two areas in Risbygate Street were cordoned off, one at the scene where the woman’s body was found and one further along Risbygate Street where blood was found.

The second scene where the blood was found has now been lifted but the cordon in the car park remains in place whilst police continue with their enquiries.

A post mortem examination is due to take place this afternoon, to try to find out the cause of death.
