A 22 year old man is critically ill in hospital after being assaulted in Reading in the early hours of Sunday.
It happened during a fight between two groups of people on St Mary's Butts in the centre of Reading.
An 18 year old girl was also taken to hospital for treatment after being punched in the face, but she has now been sent home.
Two men, aged 19 and 24, are being questioned over what happened to her.
The 22 year old man who was assaulted was taken to the Royal Berkshire Hospital before being transferred to the JR2 Hospital in Oxford.
Detective Sergeant Elton Evans, investigating the assaults, said:
“We are still in the early stages of the investigation and are trying to ascertain exactly what happened between these groups of people and any motive behind the assaults.
“I am keen to speak to anyone who was in the St Mary’s Butts area of Reading who has any information which might help us piece together exactly what happened and find the people responsible for both assaults.”
