"Private" Celebration for Royal Couple

29 April 2012, 06:00

The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge celebrate their first wedding anniversary today.

This time last year their marriage ceremony was watched by billions of people around the world.

The Royal couple are expected to mark the day on their own after spending part of the weekend with friends.

A St James's Palace spokesman would not comment on the couple's plans only saying they would be celebrating it "privately''.

It's been a busy year for Kate - who grew up in the leafy village of Bucklebury in Berkshire.

After a honeymoon in the Seychelles, a tour of Canada and California last summer, Kate has carried out a string of solo engagements around the country while William spent a 6 week deployment in the Falkands as an RAF Search and Rescue helicopter co-pilot.

She has also become the Royal Patron of 4 charities including the Art Room based in Oxford. They use art to help troubled children get back into mainstream education.

And the Duchess has become a fashion 'icon' whose outfits provide inspiration for thousands of high street shoppers.

Every outfit Kate has worn has caused a fashion frenzy as women flock to copy her style.

The phenomenon - dubbed the Kate Effect - has seen numerous designer outfits sell out within minutes of the duchess being spotted wearing them.
