A foodbank which serves just one suburb of Birmingham says it's giving away a tonne of food every single week.
The bank in Sparkhill is part of a network of foodbanks helping 41 thousand people in the city. Managers there say it is a problem reflected across the West Midlands and the country.
The recipients of handouts are usually referred by people like GP's or job centres.
Manager Nigel Brookhouse told Heart 'We're giving away a tonne a week, that's about a skip full. It's getting worse, we will need 40 tonnes of donated food between now and Christmas. It's people from all walks of life, many are working but just can't make ends meet. These are not people who waste money. It takes alot of guts to come to a foodbank and say I can't afford to feed my kids.'
