Maggots warning in Wirral wheelie bins

Wirral council have admitted to receiving more and more calls from people who have got maggots living in their wheelie bins in the warm weather.

Officers say they usually get issues towards the end of the summer not at the beginning.

It's thought the warm weather we have seen in recent weeks is to blame for the reports.

Tara Dumas is the Waste Services Manager with Wirral Council and said:

"Just keep an eye on how you store your waste in the house before it gets into your bin.  Often flies can come in through the window and lay their eggs or get trapped in rubbish in the litter bin.

"There will be juice pooling in the bottom of the bin which flies love to feed off and to lay their eggs in.

"Using disinfectant on a frequent basis will keep that in check as well."
