Labour Wins PCC Poll

Labour saw off Ukip in the South Yorkshire police and crime commissioner by-election but the victory was secured amid dire voter turnout.

Alan Billings won with 74,060 votes, 50.02%, with Ukip's Jack Clarkson taking second place on 46,883, 31.66%.

A senior Labour source said they ``took Ukip on and won'' despite Nigel Farage's claim he was putting the ``people's army's'' tanks on their lawn.

The publicity surrounding the Rotherham child exploitation scandal, which triggered the resignation of the previous PCC Shaun Wright, did not translate into a high turnout, with just 148,062 votes cast, around 14% of those eligible.
