Five people have been arrested following a number of drive-by shootings in Kempston and Elstow.

Police have received two reports where an air rifle has been fired at members of the public on Sunday (10 Aug). Officers believe there may be more cases.

On Sunday afternoon at 3.20pm a woman was walking along Bedford Road in Kempston, near to Sainsbury’s supermarket, when a family saloon slowed down nearby and a person in the car fired a pellet at her which lodged in her shoulder. The vehicle then drove off towards Bedford and the victim was taken to Bedford Hospital for treatment.

Around 25 minutes later, officers were called to Hillsden Avenue in Elstow. A youth had fired an air rifle at a member of the public who was walking along an alleyway, before running away.

Officers arrested five individuals who were taken into custody for questioning before being released on police bail.

Detective Constable Amanda Durrant, who is investigating both incidents, said: “These were two very serious incidents which involved a weapon being discharged and members of the public fearing for their lives. I believe that other offences may have taken place on the same day and would urge anyone who has any information to come forward and speak with me.”
