Police Investigate Lewisham Fire

Firefighters are being called heroes after saving the lives of five women and two children from a fire at flats in Lewisham in the early hours of this morning. 

The fire broke out in a four storey block of flats on Campshill Road around 2.30am.

Firefighters rescued five women, one child, and one baby, and the Brigade's control officers gave life saving advice over the phone to those inside the flats. 

Four people jumped from the first floor of the building before firefighters arrived on the scene. 

An additional 31 people were evacuated from the building.

Nine people were taken to hospital where they remain in a stable condition. 

Detective Sergeant Graham Rickard, said: "The fire is being treated as suspicious and we are currently pursuing all lines of enquiry in order to establish how it started. This was a very serious incident which could have resulted in multiple fatalities."
