A new London Overground link from Highbury and Islington to Dalston Junction has been heralded as the "M25 of rail" by the Mayor.

The 1.3-mile section of track means Victoria line and national rail passengers can avoid central London and reach Canary Wharf more easily.

Mayor Boris Johnson told London's Heart that the final link between Surrey Quays and Clapham Junction will be finished next year, creating a great new way to get around.

He said: "This is an M25 for overground rail. By the time we've put in the new South London line as well, you will have an orbital link all the way around London.

"It will be an M25 without delays. A smooth-flowing M25."
