Shopkeeper Fights Off Knifeman

CCTV footage has been released of a shopkeeper battling a robber who held a woman at knifepoint during a foiled raid at a London jeweller's.

It happened at Harrolds Discount Jewellers on Dagenham Heathway on Friday 21 October 2011.

Detective Chief Inspector Ian Corner said: "This was a violent attack which left the shop workers extremely shaken.

"They acted with great courage to fight off the suspect and were lucky to have avoided being seriously injured.

"We need help from the public to trace this individual before he attempts to target someone else."

The store's camera captured the shaven headed man lunging at the shop owner and holding a knife to a female shop assistant's throat.

The footage shows the man entering the store clearly intent on his plan of action. The owner, standing behind the sales counter, at first seems unaware of him.

But, when the robber grabs the sales woman and holds a knife to her throat, he immediately springs to action.

Seemingly unconcerned for his own safety, he rushes toward the man who releases his hostage, only to move menacingly toward the owner.

The owner then grabs a broom and fends off the suspect, who slashes wildly at him before eventually fleeing the scene.

The knifeman is believed to have crossed the road and disappeared into the shopping centre along Dagenham Heathway.

Police ask for anyone recognising the man or knowing of his whereabouts to contact the police on 020 8345 4226 or call Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 11.
