Virgin Trains is expected to continue running the West Coast Main Line for at least another nine months.

The Department for Transport is to ask Virgin to carry on its franchise after it expires in December, while it finalises plans for a new franchise bidding system.

Serious flaws were found in the original award, which was due to go to FirstGroup.

Virgin has run the West Coast line, from Euston to Scotland, since 1997.
