Kew Gardens says its conservation work is being "irreversibly" damaged because of government cuts.
It claims 130 members of staff are having to go as part of a £5 million reduction in budget.
The Prospect Union says there was a steep drop in the Royal Botanic Gardens' public funding in 2010, while at the same time the Heritage Act requires Kew to carry out its work preserving plants that are endangered.
