Harriet's Blog: Holidays with the kids

Holidays become a bit of a strange concept when you have little kids.

I think my first child, Louis, was about 3 months old when it dawned on me that I wouldn't be having what I typically recognised as a 'holiday' for quite some time.

Lazy days by the pool and late nights exploring fabulous cities are clearly going to have to be put on hold for the foreseeable future.

I have taken Louis on holiday;  the 4 hour flight to Tenerife was torture and by breakfast the first morning I already wanted to go home as it seemed easier than trying to make it work elsewhere.

I was weaning him, it was hot, and he didn't like the travel cot. One bit. Things seemed to settle down after the 4th day and then it was time to go home.

So now that I also have 6 month old Max, I thought that I'd skip packing up and going away during my break and do a few nice things at home with the kids instead. And, let's face it, even getting up at 6.30am is a lie in for a breakfast presenter!

We went to a kids farm, rode on a tractor and Louis got a fabulous sand and water table for the garden. Seasoned parents will sigh at my foolishness as I'm already getting irritated by the little grains that get everywhere.

Still, at least I get to feel the sand under my feet sooner than I had thought...
