New figures from Alcohol Concern have found more than 480,000 people in the North East are being admitted to hospital every year because of alcohol misuse.
The stats, released in a new report, show there were 1,206 deaths from alcohol in the region last year.
A map of alcohol harm has revealed 27% of adults in the North East are drinking more than the reccomended Government guidelines.
That's 480,419 people.
Alcohol-related A&E admissions in the region make up just over 60% of the total admissions figures.
Meanwhile, inpatient admissions are responsible for almost two thirds of the total cost burden.
Nationally 9.6 million people in England are now drinking in excess of Government guidelines, of whom 2.4 million are classed as ‘high risk’.
