Man Critical After Shildon Crash

A man who suffered serious injuries when the car he was in crashed in Shildon is in a 'critical' condition in hospital.

The collision involved two VW Passat cars, which crashed head-on into each other yesterday lunchtime on West Auckland Road.

The first Passat, silver in colour was driven by a 21-year-old man from Shildon, who was unhurt; his front seat passenger was a 19-year-old woman from Bishop Auckland who received a minor leg injury and his rear passenger was a 22-year-old man from Shildon who suffered a serious head injury.

He has been detained in the James Cook Hospital in Middlesbrough and earlier this morning his condition was confirmed as critical.

The driver of the other Passat, which was blue, was a 46-year-old man from Bishop Auckland who suffered a serious knee injury. He has been detained in Darlington Memorial Hospital while his passenger, a 28-year-old man also from Bishop Auckland was unhurt.

The driver was arrested on suspicion of dangerous driving and after being interviewed was released on bail pending further enquiries.

Anyone who saw the collision and has not been in contact with police is asked to ring 101 and ask for the road policing unit.
