A man and a woman, being questioned about the death of toddler who died 24 hours after being admitted to hospital, have been released on bail.
Police were alerted on Wednesday by staff at St Peter's Hospital, Chertsey, when the young girl, who was approaching her second birthday, was brought into A and E with serious injuries.
She was later transferred to St George's Hospital, Tooting, but died 24 hours later.
The toddler has not yet been formally identified and a post mortem examination to establish the cause of death will take place later.
A 24-year-old woman and a 35-year-old man from the Egham area were arrested on suspicion of murder, assault occasioning GBH and child neglect. They have been released on police bail until Thursday, June 5th.
Detective Chief Inspector Mark Preston, from the Surrey and Sussex Major Crime Team, said: "The death of such a young child is extremely tragic and officers are currently carrying out a full and thorough investigation into the circumstances surrounding the injuries she sustained."
