Thumbs up for Christmas wheel in Chester

Planners have decided a big wheel for tourists to ride on - similar to the London Eye - can be built this Christmas in Chester.

There was some opposition to where it will be put up - outside the City's Crown Court - but those problems have now been ironed out.

The plans also include a Victorian Christmas market, an ice rink and a Santa's grotto, while the wheel itself will offer views across Chester, North Wales and Wirral.

It's been organised by Chester Renaissance and Chief Executive Rita Waters said:

"We are delighted to continue the celebrations by bringing a Christmas event to Chester this year of a quality and scale that will showcase this city at its very best at such a magical time of year.

"As well as our key partners, this event couldn't have been delivered without the close working relationship we have built up with the landowners and Her Majesty’s Court Service – all of whom share in our ambitious plans for this city."

The team in charge of the event have worked closely with Cheshire West and Chester Council.

Cllr Mike Jones, Leader of the Council said:

"This exciting event is further evidence of continued partnership working in Chester between Cheshire West and Chester Council, Chester Renaissance, Chester City Management and businesses.

"By working together – with a shared ambition - we are building the reputation of Chester as a destination of choice for shopping and entertainment, which will support investment in the city and put us firmly on the map."
