A man who ended up in hospital after being assaulted by a four-strong gang was the intended target of the attack, police believe.
The 29-year-old was talking to a friend in Wardie Road, Glasgow, when a car approached him at around 9.20pm on Saturday.
Four men got out of the blue VW and subjected him to a serious assault.
Emergency services attended and the victim was taken to Glasgow's Royal Infirmary, where he is said to be in a stable condition.
Following the attack, the men got back in the vehicle and sped down the street towards Edinburgh Road.
Around 20 minutes later, the car was found on fire at Sandymount Cemetery.
The vehicle, which had been stolen from Edinburgh, will be examined by forensics officers.
Detectives are now appealing for information about both incidents.
Detective Sergeant Colin Thapar said: "The motive for this attack remains unclear, however I do believe the victim was the intended target and I am appealing for anyone who was in the area around the time of the attack to contact us.
"In particular if anyone has a dash cam, I would ask them to check their footage as it could hold footage which could assist our investigation.
"Also, if anyone saw the VW vehicle when it was being driven in the area, I would urge them to contact us. Any small piece of information could prove vital in our enquiries."
