Works start at the Wellingborough landmark

Improvement works have begun to restore one of Wellingborough's landmarks to its former glory; the historic Hind Hotel.

Scaffolding's now gone up and work is now expected to tak around 10 months to complete.

The Heritage Lottery Fund, The Borough Council of Wellingborough and the hotel owner are investing more than £950,000 to carry out the external refurbishment.

The work is part of the Townscape Heritage Initiative Scheme.

The Hind Hotel, located at the heart of the town centre, is a Grade II* listed building that dates back to the 17th century.

Wellingborough Borough Council say:

"The sustainable restoration has been a key focus for the Town Heritage Initiative scheme since the application was first made in 2009.

As part of the initiative the externals of the historic building will be sympathetically restored.

This grant award will help maintain an important part of Wellingborough’s heritage, provide new jobs, maintain traditional skills and contribute to the town’s wider regeneration.

The council was awarded £1.4m from the Heritage Lottery Fund which will continue to be invested into the town, to ensure that Wellingborough remains a market town that residents across the borough can enjoy.

The hotel will remain open throughout the external renovation, and the owners and contractors are working together to minimise disruption to visitors."

Leader of the Borough Council of Wellingborough, Martin Griffiths, said:

“We are delighted that work has started to renovate the external aspects of the Hind Hotel. This is a landmark within the town that represents a significant part of Wellingborough’s history.

We will be working closely with the owners and the contractors to minimise disruption to visitors while the improvement works take place.”
