Fire at electrical substation near Holyrood causes alarm

Large plumes of smoke and the sound of explosions caused alarm near the Scottish Parliament in Edinburgh after an electrical substation caught fire.

The fire service received reports of a blaze at Slater's Steps in Holyrood Road at around 12.35pm.

People were evacuated from nearby offices and properties as a precaution as crews dealt with the fire.

There were no reported casualties.

The Scottish Fire and Rescue Service said a large volume of smoke and the sound of explosions were reported.

A SFRS statement said: "We are currently dealing with a well-developed fire at an electrical substation near Holyrood Road, Edinburgh.

"Three fire appliances and an aerial appliance are in attendance. Crews are working alongside partners @policescotland to evacuate nearby properties as a precaution."
